Health Services
At Banning Unified School District, we recognize that healthy students are better prepared to learn, grow, and succeed. Our School Health Services program plays a critical role in supporting the physical and emotional well-being of every student, ensuring they have the foundation needed to thrive in school and beyond.
Our Health Services Team includes a credentialed School Registered Nurse, Licensed Vocational Nurses, and Tech 1’s/health clerks across all school sites:

Together, they work collaboratively with families, educators, and healthcare providers to ensure quality, student-centered care.
The School Nurse is an essential member of the educational team, supporting student success by:
● Participating in state-mandated health screenings (vision, hearing, dental)
● Developing and managing care plans for chronic and acute health conditions
● Coordinating and delivering staff trainings on health and safety protocols
● Preparing health reports and recommendations for special education teams (IEPs and 504s)
● Assisting families in connecting with healthcare providers and resources
● Responding to medical emergencies and supervising medication administration
● Participating in Student Attendance Response Team (SART) meetings
● Drafting and distributing parent notifications for communicable diseases
● Applying evidence-based nursing standards, quality improvement practices, and public health principles
● Serving as a liaison between school, home, and healthcare providers
Licensed Vocational Nurses (LVNs) and Tech 1/Health Clerks also play a vital role. They:
● Administer first aid and daily health support
● Perform specialized physical healthcare procedures (LVNs)
● Maintain student health records and monitor compliance
● Support safe medication administration and routine care
● Receive ongoing training from the district nurse
Together, our health services team is committed to maintaining a safe, healthy, and inclusive school environment—one where every student can learn and succeed to their fullest potential.
California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Immunization Schedule
California law requires that students are up to date on immunizations before entering school or advancing to certain grade levels. The current CDPH immunization schedule outlines the vaccines and doses required for school attendance, including:
● DTaP/Tdap (Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis) – Series completed in early childhood; Tdap booster required for 7th grade entry
● Polio (IPV/OPV) – Complete primary series
● MMR (Measles, Mumps, Rubella) – Two doses
● Hepatitis B – Three doses
● Varicella (Chickenpox) – Two doses
● Additional requirements for certain grade levels as determined by CDPH updates

California Hearing & Vision Screening Schedule
In compliance with California Education Code and regulations, our district follows the state-mandated screening guidelines: ● Vision Screening is required:
○ Upon entry to school (TK/K)
○ Every three years thereafter through Grade 8 (i.e., Grades 1, 4, and 7), plus for special education students on IEPs at entry and triennial reviews
