is it in the seating ignore Mike Kennedy everybody okay good morning it is now it really the time it is now 8:34 in the meet the Saturday July 16th special board meeting is now in session is there any if you would like me to pledge allegiance this morning oh I'm sorry thank you I missed it Volkswagen mine doesn't Sago Palm since we don't have anybody to take Roku okay president Statler when is present Lucy Martinez Lara as is mrs. Mayra anguiano we do have a core all right that's that we have a quorum now the flag salute mr. please place your right hand over your heart ready begin your God so I need a item 1.3 I need a motion and a second thought. The agenda presented a second an emotion from Mr Smith and a second from is Troutman all those in favor say aye Community comments do we have any community, community okay so we won't need that today and I am 2.1 special board meeting board governance Open Session be with you today continue our work and I play will be productive and our real goal today is to finalize the government a book so we have a little change in turnover and administrative assistants and so we want to make sure we have all the details there in the rough cool things that I think we still need to go back with so that's one of our main objective because then you're going to be able to do the survey the word of self evaluation at the end of today and then you're hot. Is Rick wanted to happen there when you adopt it then we're going to have a conversation with superintendent Davis are and the board around setting priorities and so the board as we know from the governor's coreworks goal is to turn the ship and then mr. Davis and staff there's no water at work to get that done and to monitor house places and pointed countability so that you know yes we're moving in that direction and if not work with the superintendent to change the course in so we really want to have that rich dialogue today so when we get to that point we're going to do a little brainstorming with you all about what a SWOT analysis your what do you see as the strength of a straight right now what are the weaknesses what are awkward and then what are threats and don't tell me different mr. Davis to here and then he's going to talk to you a little bit about where he is I think so far in his journey in the sea and working with you also send it Priority we did some work with we did some things for you to look at for the end of the year I know because of the changes that probably wasn't as elevated as it could have been but now you have the opportunity is the school year with mr. Davis to be really clear what are the three or four things that are mission critical we have to focus on these abandoned Unified School District either our board priorities and then working with mr. Davis then have him about the operational plan how that work can you get done and then how will you know how will you know at what degree will your satisfaction be measured right so that will be a big part of our conversation and depending on time cuz I know of hamburger always takes a little more time than we think I did I did get the ticking action guide which is a companion piece that goes with the governor's core book and it's really good and so I have an activity there if we have time for you all to do you to consider is that what you would want to do going forward to this one thing to read about the kind of horny things with any of the governmental process and then how do you translate it quiet to your actual working so the power of going through something like this is the reading it in principle you've been thinking about what the government might that is and now you actually haven't offered any of the dialogue around a structured activities a dangerous back to the literature that you're reading something we can talk about see if you want to do that and then we have the board self us out I did and I'll talk about this again the minute I did time together I did take the opportunity to scale back the for itself is out because the feedback from the board last time was that it was really long and cumbersome and even when we went through it there were some items that send a text and then there were others that were just confusing and so look we're going to go through that today give you the opportunity to do that evaluation and get feedback and then the goal with that is really coming back and digging into it which we didn't do it great level of satisfaction and I think that opportunity is huge because it is to use it as an individual and and team goals and then to come back and say that we do so that's what it looks like today right. Right. And you know one of the things some people to do is they actually watch a board meeting and then evaluate themselves in terms of interest in all those different dimensions where we strategically interpersonal had we do the political Dimension so something to think about for future just like it's not easy to watch either but sometimes it can be when you're in the moment you're not really thinking about how that all looks together and so could be all right insurance we have a activity I do always like to kind of get our heads around the work in the room before we start and so since you're at that juncture of your starting a new school year this is the time to really think about what year what you Vision hopes wishes dreams independent unified I wanted you to take a couple of minutes to in ten words or less in so that's your constraint you don't get that list everything and what's most important for Banning students to take away with them at the end of 22 23 and I'm going to just talk about this is different this year from from years past how does all this happen in these last couple of years 10 words or less give me a couple minutes to think and write and then we will share got it yes okay alright we can catch you. Yep I would agree those are not you're not answering my question in those words so we will we will allow you back although all of this social media thinks of change tell people not write a novel alright so and there we go right there I love it I don't care payment forces you to think a little bit differently I can go on and on so it's kind of like in journalism school year we right to leave right you try to get it to a certain length and have everything in it so okay I said I want students to leave feeling they got a gray education that they were using years to come. 3 okay in your general team was really that what whatever you have here transports to your next steps right yes and I think we've always felt that way but I'm wondering if some of the ways that you you know for trade what you want for your students is is different because of the pain. should I let you know I heard accomplishments patient and both all of these are alluded to options and opportunities because of the education that they received did you come up with some different tenant annoying students knowing that you're cared about and being able to see inarticulate your progress with you keep that in the hopper because when we get to the goal setting in the priority setting what you want to make sure is it just you and your reference during this morning is this thinking about for our students then how does a priority align with that sometimes we want one thing but we still obligated to do another and so as much as you can. Come here and so the goal is to have alignment in the system so that the outcomes you're looking for have actually been beat up by all these pieces that you put in place if there's a mismatch that's where you'll have frustration has poured over what you said because it's not going to get you the outcome that you want so if you're talking about you know a great education then it's taking that apart and defining what is that cuz that's a big East it's it's working at Universal graduate profile what do we want our students to have all those tk12 years before they leave us and if it's you know how relationships Community connectedness wanting them to feel cared for what are the priorities that you said we want to make sure we will be in a little while other comments or questions thoughts about that I think you know I'm my wondering is in 3 years ago if we'd done that activity if if this might have been more around academic as much as you said great education we said opportunities it wasn't wizard of the heavy-handed focus that we've had in years past the same proving our scores by Espina percentage points and so I think that's one thing to keep in mind as you think about short and long-term goals is that one of the things we know where the students who they've gone through so much in these last couple of years as a staff of our communities how do we and do the support that I heard and your work also continue to push that trajectory Infamous handbook so you have a copy yes you have your version in the last person that I have space March 2022 do you have an updated version 7th May okay so I don't I got that fire okay okay if we go through it and I'm going to have you paged through if my recollection is that we were I'll have you changed your with me for the Preamble page for and getting to Page Six stop the ticket she's going to want to write all her so much that they do that you are comfortable with the board job the Board of Trustees in your your role abilities and then if you get to page 7 we had a little bit of a longer conversation around your values so are we comfortable with kind of where we landed that day round two more collaboration accountability trust and being results-oriented that's where we left your values are we good with that we can take the Highlight off and leave that to Western discussion last time make sure you don't okay what we're going to say it mr. Davis does a gold hair on it yep and to your point don't overthink it you can't have you have a lot more value since, like they're too many we just did and you're going to be able to give you do you listen all your values. So how do you encapsulate as a board if your mission is getting unified as a community that vibrates to develop responsible respectful prepared students to achieve their full potential to have some of that language in there been a unified district vision is to prepare Inspire and educate when you look at the values you want to understand. Teamwork collaboration accountability trust and results-oriented is what you'd come up with an issue so now do you want Community connectedness or Community input do you want something relating to diversity and Equity or you think there's enough in your mission official laceration I just yeah so let's talk about how you would want to see is a community connectedness community input is it our values are we don't really need to add the call okay that should be inclusive okay so when you talk to operation you don't just mean staff everybody okay okay I like that what about the diversity peace okay what do yeah and I think I think you were saying what I remember conversation was the values was about making sure that value is the different voices the different perspectives but yeah again if you have collaboration is that income do you need to call that out value our diverse community is that a value he also said when you think about accountability also it's kind of the same you know do you value accountability or do you value what about you teamwork collaboration don't if you don't bite so is there a way to save in a way that's more of values oriented like Supervalu Student Success we value everything was getting a success then how are you going to Nick make sure you're on the right path that's going to beach results that's going to be for accountability so what what results so so what what is it that we actually right and if you want to say something more things were put up a fuss like results-oriented then go back to the accountability piece where we used to set these big goals of everybody's going to improve it at 3% then our values which were around individual students Rose around social emotional well-being kind of got pushed aside for this heavy-handed accountability piece that isn't necessarily a value but it's an end result I guess that's too that if I was thinking about you know my values it would be what how do I live my daily life to get to whatever those outcomes are there I'm looking for so I think diversity with teamwork collaboration trust those are true value I think accountability and being results-oriented Arthur Mission I'm not sure they're really bad so right exactly and I wonder if each and every student right versus how come at the end of General Bank yes right is it individuality is it the value we value. Superintendent yeah and what do we believe what are invested in building capacity little jargony maybe is there another way to you do we value individual potential do we value 02 un do you need because if you're saying we value diversity teamwork collaboration and trust those are some under ending beliefs yes integrity right so I can write try to make it. What what program we already use that we actually die so Avid is more opportunity accountability so I am building dinner now but I'm thinking about you guys in general like this is our core seen and everything. Expect trustworthy care maintain a level of citizenship each other Salata we got to your point to talking about students and we know what we expect of them and what we we want them to grow up right to be respectful folks can interact with people in a healthy way and do you want that for your whole and I think you know trustworthy Fair all those things also have to respect the other thing that I was thinking going back to what you guys talked a little bit ago around your your goals for students for this year there was you know some empathy compassion those kinds of emotional values that you bring to the school district so is there something they are that you'd want ad is there a value there that you want we want this we value this and we wanted him few throughout our schools is an empathy is our compassion is it is there a word there that you want to highlight relationship we talked about that you know so here's what I have in my notes diversity Integrity teamwork collaboration respect connection and then there is if if you trust and then if you want it something around Student Success you can have a link or is that stretching that section 2 so now is that again diversity Integrity teamwork collaboration respect connection trust those enough those 7 things to get out if we have in so think of it this way overarching abstract Notions that in view all the work that we do so if we really are approaching truly our core values of diversity teamwork Integrity collaboration fact connection trust are we then for filling our mission statement are those things needed to drive our mission statement which is really where you talk about through all of that what are we going to do what's our day-to-day work and then your vision statement what's are high aspirations right again, go back to Mike in word limit I said word limit so one of the things that I would advocate for next year that you do is do more of an activity just around this because the three things that you really should think about next year as you after this year in Jersey after the first of the year and you're thinking about where you've been this last year-and-a-half what's happened you know this fall kind of where you are revisiting your mission statement in your vision and your values and just are the values right so what are we truly believe in and really give yourself time to brainstorm think look at some other examples really allow a deeper dive into that number protocols that can be you is to take you into that this was kind of already done so if you remember when I came in this was all done so we didn't develop those together others did and then we just kind of been editing them and I think that's part of their frustration challenge is that you I need a whole cord look at it you need to put everything up on the wall and then went oh it down until you get to that piece of your really comfortable with so I would recommend that we just land on where you can agree right now and there's nothing wrong there's nothing going to be wrong but you may not eat and as you go through the year you may be thinking about okay I'm sitting up at the board hears evaluate we bringing I think we bring is at work for every meeting I really want to start ticulitis or we're not doing enough of this and I really want to call it out so that it's something the board holds itself and then our community account I speak to any group internally and externally whenever any one of our principals leadership team results of that when it's their people start to think what is that what we are really doing that what I do and so the only way to do that as an example kinds of dry well what is Annie Annie we should be preparing inspiring an estimate that's right here in our visit so when people see that they start to question is that what we are actually doing do we need to change that or do we need to step up and make them so it will be a visual everything we do that one and reflect upon is that is that is that what we're doing and if not and we didn't need to change it or we need to set higher expectations are you comfortable with where we are right now knowing that this is going to be a work in progress and that you're going to continue that kind of think about it and go through some sort of an activity are really recommend not and it can take two hours just to come up with your your true values and everybody owns and believes in and you go to a real process there I think to superintendent davises Point what you're really want to do is have this piece everywhere because if this is really who we are we're going to walk the talk and we want you to know what we value and believe can you order from it on your agendas you know we always had our board members read the mission and vision at every board meeting so that everybody and you wanted to be a point where I may not know word for word but I remember repair Inspire and educate like I worked out enough that I know that's who we are but one knows what he's going to say when you start stops Bronco shop now principal so everyone knows that this is Bronco strong this is our said it will continue to fail. this is what we stand for everybody doesn't know what the mission is in the and it and it gives you that those underpinnings to come back to write the when you're working the Scout you're working with unity and you sent you know it's not just prepare and educate its Inspire right that's another element to a classroom that's another Elementary School Rock and strong that's inspiring do all that contains in it is something the students are are elected you and Gil Mumbai and so that's another thing that you're looking at and that's why when you go back to accountability and result-oriented right yes of course but you are and is that really a value in it inspirational is that. Yeah absolutely situation but they know how to react because they know what the mission so they can make up with they're going to stay or they can go it keeps us in a line is it an alignment with I don't know unless we make it up. And it is about rolling it out and constantly revisiting it you know I'm a fan of making sure every year everybody started it's in some place it's on stuff so that when people see it there like okay there is a brat and that's what you want to hear what's our Banning branch exactly right Google again is the people could say Inspire educate prepare that they Inspire as I got it now okay and then I agree so so how do you want to do that so that you can still if we get other things done today have this ready to go have it ready to go for that yeah I know Ben 10 superintendent Davis can bring them up to speed yes okay yes exactly okay Edith Wharton yeah if they have an idea and if they get it in advance so they can think about it in art just yeah each board member dies one payment you got seven here so somebody's going to okay I think that's great and I think again you know your commitment to definitely getting our other two board members involved and then from there encouraging each other to continue to think about you know some boards at the end of a meeting do a quick you know evaluation just did debrief and that we talked about this before but did we do we stay true to what we say we value today or or members will just say now I really want to remind us all that one of our integrity or respect or connection or whatever is well as well. all right I have us as fine on page seven and page eight other than that areas that would you all have a good night okay that was kind of look at you yeah okay that's nice yeah that's that's that's awesome okay so what do you want your hand scratch this is like for the or is it for the year I don't know I mean it's not it's not a requirement it's something I think that you all put in there but again so so the power the issues that we are meeting is ongoing however just think about if I'm a brand new board member and I'm working with the superintendent to get on board it having a list of things that the board cobbler's bench pride and it's probably not a bad thing and it may not be the most current list and just you know it's going to be so if there are things that you want to add now are not care I would Adam but I you know I I just picturing myself I'm in the community maybe I will kids in elementary school run for school board and I may not know about some of these Ikea yeah right and I'm noticing how you know the first 3 or here then he says something I don't know if that was because it was on Medicaid so I'm trying to think of it like is that I am not working okay let's go through this because I think having these be too timely is probably you know to your point is problematic having to be bigger generic think what are you is a district going to go to the values what are the pieces of Pride that are programmatic you could I mean opening a Performing Arts Center maybe not that it was on time and within but if it's something that serves the whole community that is a point of Pride I would leave that in there but I would leave it in just as you know performing like you yeah they want a used tire shop yeah okay and then dual immersion how do you want to work that Crystal immersion okay okay one of the first that's easy then we then we've got you have mentioned that they were yeah they did use tomorrow and I think that's really the shift in the point of Pride for our district sense because again what you're trying to communicate with this governance handbook is that sense of who we are not what we just what we did or what we accomplished Who We Are right no I yeah and that's happened to me too many places over the years how can it still be right but that's not how all of these School District I got formed and yes I traded in my right so I love that I think that's a diverse Community is a point of Pride I mean I think one of the things that you know I would I want to have in here since we are helping this up and I didn't do this part so I've now been put back the notion that you do you have A+ cert or you have raises because that may not be and so to start your calls those things out those are good on a annual fact sheet for the board for you for talking points those are great but you don't want him in anything that's in a got some longevity and might be on the show if it's not quite that would definitely don't you have the first Purge what is it what's a huge so is it investment in the district and community community investment in Community Pride what number 9 an ongoing value that you yeah I would keep that so right now I have the Performing Arts Center dual immersion First Community community cried I wonder if you want to say more of in a community long okay Community identity Community okay right and then number night and did you want the fire department in there okay okay man intended parents you're going to work on that thing and then work with the board on that so that would be cuz I think we do need to scale them back Largo's you should I mean a couple is really you know 7 is too many Right End tell me a little bit more about how these were developed okay okay so I mean typically 324 as an absolute maximum kind of a rule of thumb because it just becomes too cumbersome right well so there it is on that piece of paper write their diverse community that collaborates to develop responsible respectful prepared students to achieve their full potential I just talked about this again I didn't work with the port on this but they're a couple ways people are approaching the 841 a lot of people are focusing on those goals because it is the work of the District of me not half be done and if you should all be invested in what does elk have goals are and how the work is getting done with you because your your metrics are in there your how is in there your resources allocated mean it is you know it's really the district plants and then there is usually at least one other one that I'm so 32 for the El Cap goals become priorities and then often or it will add in the fiscal responsibility cuz that's not in the El Cap calls or because increase parent and Community engagement that's in Euro Cup goals right soon achieve meant that's in Euro Cup goal so everything kind of gets covered in there in terms of you know your your priorities but they maintained customer response a long-term Financial viability clearly you have a huge responsibility and take that seriously and another one that you would have physical for the district superintendent but then that aligns that all we're going to do some snacks here at put you're trying to make my first graders but if it accelerates Junior Achievement right if it's increased parent Community engagement absolute right and if there's another one that has to do with culture and climate in your support of you know students that's another one that you can you know two and then while you may not be responsible for maintaining fiscal responsibility or liability if you know that's important that you understand why and so the thing about those kinds of goals is that you may change typically has a little bit static then underneath it are those priorities that we talked about right so that's where the board then says accelerating and increasing or eight tsunoshima is always going to be at work or what but it might be looking your data that for a couple of years it's around a through G and your College and Career Readiness cuz we haven't given that enough attention and then we move that needle and now we come back and stay secondary math math teacher to the priorities under that overarching goal the objectives that you're going to actually kick off and work on in a temporal way those are the things then that you as a as a group as their governance are working on and then see if it isn't just on this huge piece of student achievement cuz that's too big but it's on the Define pieces that the board has said when we look at our priorities graduation rates is huge and so how it's going to be cheating if they're not leaving the hospital at the end of the evaluation. Need to move something else down and now you want to make sure the attention shifts to this new priority that has a seed in that area that's right and then again coming back to that so you have your big goals and then let's just say we picked those in our three El tap and Sports of the fiscal responsibility think about how easy it is for you guys if you're a cheap mint is we know it's a district go on I are you talking about things that you hold dear and that you're going ultimately evaluating okay yes yes okay and then so you don't need to have it is it okay to take that one off because it is in your El Cap you know it's being done so it's not something that you want to elevate to that level I mean if you felt it something it happened with a reason why you needed to see what okay and then take out for do you still need to run those by the other yeah and I think your El Cap goes Fall on Your Knees the school yeah. Happened sometimes if there's something needs to be done sister needs to be set and you know. Clearly something you're going to communicate now I think I remember Troutman those are they the same Compass right and so maybe Bremen at your reaction to those three and as you think about the work that you ascertain needs to be done in your time. Does that make sense for you is a lining shouldn't be here because I just and that is something that we we are diving into to have those discussions about building the thought I think we have a great team or what have we been focused on how we using equitable so I think one of the things the board in the superintendent one think about what that goal in particular is it's it's big it's a little ephemeral right so I will you know measured what's the evidence that you're going to be looking for and then you know different kind of perspective what are some of the things that you know from your seat that you need to focus on a motherboard to know that working hard to get to this beast and qualitative and quantitative or a process you know it might be theirs professional learning that's happening around this it might be about evaluation series of things that you could do because demonstrating this is challenging right having the outcome data that you was a portal say we feel like that change so part of how you know what changes also might be these are the pieces that are happening and you're hearing about them and you know that that's working because you know that work is being done right custard chili yep yep if you wanted to say something else okay are cats supposed to hurt right then you know that's a different place we can jump to it now cuz it's really here because now again accelerating academic academic achievement is a huge bucket and so how do we prove that what are we looking for Halloween and the board doesn't you know decide to what you're going to say when we think about student academic achievement one of our biggest concerns is reading 50 as a counting goal and that is really a priority for us this year what are we doing to improve reading instruction you know whatever it is and in our district and so what you would do under these the only going to have a couple it doesn't mean he's not going to deal with achievement writ large or ethical you know that you can say our priority for that goal is really what incident those priorities you know if we have some other catastrophe is really focused on what we want to eat if you can't do anything else please don't neglect when you think that accelerating student achievement you met and you talked about it earlier dual in work your dual immersion program so you could come up with a variety of things and so if we want to take the time now we can take a break and then come back and dig into that it's up to you will be most meaning for you in terms of setting up those priority because one of the thing and I would love for us all to your front superintendent Davis but I think one of your challenges is not having everything so large and so big you can't focus on it and narrow down to what those priorities are you know my experience and looking at the data I would often come to the board and say Here's what I'm staying in the day. Here's what I think the priorities are you have a conversation around agreement disagreement and then it's sometimes the board would say an okay we are discreet those are all good priorities and we want you to focus on this so second secondary that tends to be an area for all of us that needs a lot of attention and assistance it might be you have a really high chronic absenteeism and pain around getting kisses and that kind of goes to the ethical leadership because when I read that that's every seat and so how do you work then without Stokes so I'm back to the let's just talk about you might have just you know one or two things that if you do nothing else this year in terms of academic achievement this is what we want you to focus on you don't even though you have District me be clear you don't have to give him priority so you know you you don't you could have three priorities that are all under academic achievement but you wanted to remember these are our goals and so then when he does report out to you quarterly and then at the end of the year when you do valuation he's going to give you feedback and information about what he's been doing and even though you've all had these conversations and go to evaluate him on a disc responsibilities you know what are the actions that we've taken this year to get there for negotiations you managing her budget through the allocation of resources when you look at ethical leadership we did this book study at the supporting you no doubt this way we did about you we added this valuation to better monitor that we have a community community survey to whatever it is you'd still get that information cuz he knows that the district all and you're going to get more focus on your priorities that makes sense and let me know cuz never not going to do all the things that are involved in writing the school district but what's important for you as a board is your you're turning that ship and you're staying right now are the coordinates are heavily focused on reading and social emotional well-being and so one of our challenges right now instead of the Prairies and and errands and I talked a little bit about this is we don't have to do the full body here and so I think thinking about do you want to spend some time still brainstorming and develop some of that and then doing what we're going to do with this massaging with them you know getting them to add and then or give feedback on the values getting them to do the same thing as points of Pride and then the goals and priorities. okay okay yep yep these are our priorities angry so so much so so before I get you then cuz I think I do think looking at strengths weaknesses opportunities and and and threats is something that we should do just a friend a little bit so that your because if you already have strengths and you guys all go now these are strengths then they don't need to be a priority right now but what you need to think about or where the opportunities where are the weaknesses that you've got to gross potential and so you know you're speaking from your own lived experience you're speaking from your liaison experience with a community and in from what you've seen as a Board of Trustees so you have a wealth of information knowledge and what you want to do now is really dig into that and think about that but you also want from the seat of the professional and somebody he's been here over time now and it moved to a new seat and hasn't been on the balcony what did she see from looking at the data talking to that then I'll come together and we look at that and from there then the idea of what we did last time with brainstorming let's list those up there and then the navigation of this determine which ultimately we all agree are before we take before we take a break I want to just say a couple of words about where you are coming from in terms of what you're saying is priority on the work that we're doing now is Cellar and I had a conversation about what is the priority right now to get. And I think for me right now in this moment I'm a little because I know the goal is to get the the other complaint that were talking about right now is a time for what the work is right if we don't cycling Now dentist push back now that doesn't mean that I'm not going to have an idea of how we bored I will but the go Riders to have the board say these other priorities at the big picture then I know what needs to be communicate it's one of the things that I'm working on right now is in talking about what are their goals the times now now the time is now meme Community things for me it means you know how we better support our students and again this makeshift based upon goals so the time is now for a few know how we take better care of each other focused on success and as I met with some of our principles and one of the principal says the time is now for me to be more accessible to students and staff so I want them to develop their own thoughts about it but under the alignment of the overarching goal you know we're going in the same and so I think this is the okay they should we take a quick bio break and then come back and you've already got your thinking from last year so that's helpful and we will do our SWOT analysis and then we will brainstorm and come up with Rarity and we we are going to get this handled done today it's going to happen and but look at look at the deeper dive we did today because if you remember we first and so again we came in to sort of editing and revising a document but now you're at place where your stipend back that you want to invest in and can use them to drive to work so that's going to make all this so much more that's cool alright come back at what time yep that be perfect it really brainstorming priorities is take a minute. Stickies in front of you that you don't need it will get you some I want you to just think about that district and I want you to think about what right now we're just going to do strengths right now
