Prop 28 Arts & Music in Schools

Banning Unified School District is committed to providing vibrant, inclusive visual and performing arts experiences that enrich student learning, encourage creativity and exploration, and foster a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

The District has worked collaboratively with students, families, staff, and the Banning Teachers Association to identify opportunities for expanding arts and music education across elementary, middle, and high schools.

Proposition 28 allocations support increased student access to educational opportunities that may include:

• Visual Arts
• Music
• Theater and Dance
• Graphic Arts
• Coding
• STEAM

California Education Code Section 8820 requires local educational agencies with an enrollment of 500 or more students to use at least 80 percent of expended Arts and Music in Schools funds to employ certificated or classified employees who provide arts education instruction.

Up to 20 percent of expended funds may be used for training, supplies and materials, and arts educational partnership programs, including eligible outside contractors.

These requirements help ensure Proposition 28 funding directly expands access to arts education and instructional opportunities for students.
